It’s a guide of sorts…

You see – establishing how much a website design costs is tough.

Because the truth is, a successful website can mean different things to different people…

It’s one of the reasons why web design prices and quotes vary so much. Different goals and results require different solutions.

This page is here to help you navigate the murky waters of website costs. It’s here to help you pick the website option that’s right for your budget and goals.

So read on if you want to understand how much a website costs for you and your goals

Why Should You Use WordPress to Create a Cost Effective Website?

Web design prices vary wildly, from a few hundred pounds to literally tens of millions

It’s part of the reason why understanding what you need, or are going to get for your money, can be so confusing.

Up to speed on why WordPress is a great platform to build a cost effective website?

Great. Then lets talk why website design prices vary so much and…

What Are Website Designers Prices on Average?

Website design costs are greatly effected by your goals and how you choose to have your site built…

Ultimately, the cost to create a website boils down to 3 things:

  1. Time
  2. Money
  3. Skills (in website strategy, design and development)

Most people have a lack of 1 or 2 of these resources.

And this will impact how you decide to build your website and how it much it costs you.

Generally, most website designers and agencies will base their pricing around their overheads and the time it takes to create a website. Which is one of the reasons why website costs vary so much.

To give you an idea of websites costs for different sorts of company and some examples of final website design costs (in a moment) you can find approximate hourly rate examples below:

Web DesignerOverheadsHourly Rate
Offshore web companyLower cost of living, cheap£10 to £40
Freelance web designerLow overheads, No commercial office, no employees£25 to £75
Small web agencyCommercial offices, freelance/employee wages and taxes to cover£50 to £75
Large web agencyHigh-end offices, lots of highly skilled and expensive staff£75 to £150

And of course there is the final option to create your own website (which we’ll also talk about next). Which is the cheapest option but will take time, require you to learn new skills, take longer and cost you money if you make mistakes.

Take time to consider which of the 3 resources are most valuable to you and the route you should take. And most importantly consider the opportunity cost of making the wrong choice and creating a poor performing website.

With that in mind, let talk about specific examples and options for…

WordPress Website Design Costs: A Quick Look

When it comes to launching a WordPress website you have one of four options…

Ascending in price, quality and results your options are:

I’m going to breakdown the positives and negatives for each of these website options in detail for you in a moment, along with example website design costs for each of the four types of web design company mentioned.

But if you’re eager to see a high-level overview of web design costs now, heres a quick breakdown for you:

How Much Does It Cost To Build a WordPress Website Yourself?

Are you time rich with an extremely low budget and a can do attitude?

If you are, then creating a WordPress website yourself might be a good option for you (and certainly the cheapest). Setting up one of the many available, pre-built design themes is not as difficult as you might think. Just make sure you pick a good one! – more on this in a second.

To create your own WordPress website you only need 5 things:

Lets break those down to give you an understanding of the…

Upfront DIY Website Design Costs

DIY CostsDescriptionCosts
1. Domain nameA website address that people can use to access your site.£3 to £12 /year
2. Website hostingServer storage space that provides a home for your website and makes it’s accessible over an internet connection (and so you can own your website rather than rent it).£7 to £50 /month
3. WordPress themeA pre-built design theme or “skin” that controls the design and (some of the) functionality of your WordPress website.£0 to £50
4. EducationA little specialist knowledge is needed to create a WordPress website. But if you have the time, you can easily learn these skills online.£0 to £50
5. TimeDon’t forget to include your time! What’s your time worth? Multiply your hourly rate by the time it will take and consider the opportunity cost.£???
TOTAL costThe total for all the items above and DIY website design costs range.£10 to £162

As you can see a few of these costs are recurring.

Lets break those out separately so we can take a look at maintenance and…

Ongoing Annual DIY Website Costs

ItemCost
Domain£3 to £12
Hosting£84 to £600
TOTAL£87 to £612

Now, lets go through each of these items one-by-one in a little more detail and how to make sure you get them setup correctly:

First up…

#1. Website Domain Name

The first thing you need to decide on and purchase for any new website is a domain name…

A domain name is the web address that people type in their internet browser to get to your website. Such as upwardcreative.com.

Really, the hardest part about setting up a domain name is picking one that isn’t already in use.

A domain registra that I do recommend is Namecheap.

To check if your chosen domain name is available:

  1. Visit Namecheap
  2. Search for the domain name you have in mind and check that it is available. Once you find one…
  3. Purchase your domain.
Namecheap provides cheap website domain namesPin
Namecheap: One of the best website domain name registrars

If you decide to buy a domain name from a third party such as, Namecheap, the good news is they’re generally very cheap. Depending on the extension, the average domain name should only cost you around £3–12 per year to rent.

Tip!: Consider buying multiple suffixes (e.g. .com, .co.uk, .org etc) for branding purposes and to stop competitors from snatching them up.

The only time you’ll need to pay more than this is if you want to buy a very short, memorable or popular domain that somebody else already owns.

It’s possible for certain domains like this to run into thousands or even millions pounds. But unless your a large company set on a very particular domain for a certain reason, there’s really no need to worry about this…

With a little bit of creativity and ingenuity you can easily purchase a good domain name at an extremely affordable price.

#2. Website Hosting

After deciding on a domain name the next thing you’ll need is reliable web hosting…

Web hosting is simply rented server space (think large computer) that provides a managed, secure and central home for your website, so it can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection.

If you want to actually own your website, rather than rent it from a “free” website builder company, you must purchase your own web hosting.

Prices vary a lot, but like most things in life you generally get what you pay for.

With hosting, typically the more you pay the more powerful the server will be that your site is hosted on. This means website faster loading times (which is very important to the success of your site), the ability to handle a higher volume of traffic, better security and more storage. You’ll also more likely to get better support.

Who you go with really depends on your particular needs and how important each of the points above are to you. But you need to be careful as there are some terrible hosts out there and as with any business some are far better than others.

After building and hosting many websites with numerous different hosts since around 2006 my #1 recommended website host is Cloudways.

Cloudways offer the rare combination of excellent performance, support and value.

This site is hosted on Cloudways and as you can see from the GTMetrix screenshot below this site loads in 1.2s seconds. And with an even faster perceived load time due to a lot of the site resources loading in the background.

Upward Creative website load times on Cloudways hostingPin
Upward Creative website load times on Cloudways hosting.

Cloudways hosting will help you to get a radically faster website without the technical headaches!

From as little as $12 per month some of the features Cloudways offer include:

  • 24/7/365 Support
  • Free SSL Certificates
  • CDN Add-on (for faster CDN speeds plus image optimisation I use WPCompress)
  • Free Migration
  • Unlimited Application Installation
  • Team Management
  • Dedicated Firewalls
  • 24/7 Real-time Monitoring
  • Automated Backups
  • Staging Environment
  • Optimised With Advanced Caches
  • Auto Healing
  • Regular Security Patching
  • HTTP/2 Enabled Servers
  • SSH and SFTP Access

You can also choose from a number of different top Cloud hosting providers including:

  • Digital Ocean
  • Linode
  • Vultr
  • AWS
  • Google Cloud

But for a combination of both excellent speed and value for money I use and recommend the Vultr High Frequency hosting plan, starting at $13 per month.

Cloudways aren’t the very cheapest hosting you can find, but they are very affordable, provide great support and are the best price-to-performance host I’ve found, and continue to use, out of many since I started developing websites around 2005.

If you’re looking for high performance without the high price tag I highly recommend you check them out.

#3. WordPress Website Design Theme

One of the beauties of WordPress is that with the right knowledge (more on this in a moment) it’s very easy to set up your own website or blog, using what’s known as a “theme”.

As explained in my “What is WordPress” article, a WordPress theme is basically an interchangeable “skin” that controls the look, feel and styling of your WordPress powered website.

When it comes to selecting a pre-built WordPress theme you basically have two options:

  1. Free
  2. Premium (paid).

Now, you’re probably thinking…

“Why would I pay for a theme when I can get one for free?”

That’s natural…

But the benefit of paying for a premium WordPress theme are

  1. You’re far more likely to get a higher quality product and foundation on which to build your site. And who wants to build their business on sloppy foundations?…
  2. You’re contributing towards keeping it’s developers in business and being able to provide you with on ongoing updates and support…

Premium WordPress theme creators are professionals who get paid for their efforts, so they’re incentivised to continually improve their product and provide ongoing development, feature improvements, bug fixes and support…

That’s not to say you can’t get good free themes, but buying a premium theme generally means you’re going to get a much higher quality of product and service.

I’d always recommend always going with a premium WordPress theme if you can. Especially if you’re a business. The cost of a premium WordPress theme is a very small price to pay for something that’s the foundation for your entire website and cornerstone of your business online.

Studiopress premium WordPress themesPin
Studiopress Genesis: The rock-solid foundation for your WordPress website

My number one recommendation for premium WordPress themes is Studiopress.

Studiopress themes provide excellent design, code, structural SEO foundations, support, updates and security…

…so good that I personally use their Genesis development framework in every bespoke WordPress web design or one of their premium themes in every customised WordPress web design or pre-built website I create for clients.

If a bespoke website or WordPress theme isn’t right for you, do yourself a favour and at least invest in a WordPress website built on a premium WordPress theme.

#4. Education

If you decide to build your own WordPress website you should also consider the education costs involved …

Do you take the time to work it all out for yourself? Or do you pay for step-by-step training to accelerate the process?

The internet provides an endless stream of free information on practical everything, including web design, but the question is…

Are you prepared to drink from the firehose of available knowledge and find clean waters?

Are you prepared to make the mistakes necessary to achieve success?

Or do you want to bypass all the learning and hard work with the help of an experienced freelance web designer?

You could easy spend a couple of days hunting down tutorials and piecing together the correct information.

There’s nothing wrong with that…

But, valuing your time at only £10 per hour and based on a 8 hour day, that’s already £160 of you time before you’ve even started the site or added in expenses for domain and hosting …

Which leads us nicely to the final resource you’ll need plenty of to create a website yourself…

#5. Time

Which we’ve touched on as it’s required for education…

But once you’ve found and got the the right information, even if you execute it correctly first time, you could easily spend another couple of day building and launching your own site.

It’s up to you. But remember, there’s a cost involved either way.

What do you want to spend? Your time or your money?

Security

Windows computers can be vulnerable to virus’s, due to their popularity…

…and WordPress websites can be vulnerable to malicious hackers and bots, in much the same way.

But with the right precautions it’s possible to harden your security and protect your site…

One of the best solutions for this is the iTheme’s Security plugin:

iTheme’s Security makes it very simple for anyone to secure their WordPress site from all the major WordPress security vulnerabilities with a single click, and then further tweak and enhance security from a user-friendly dashboard.
